BLOOMINGTON — Led by a record setting 3,200-meter relay team and Keirra Porter’s long jump, Terre Haute North turned in its best finish ever in the 40th annual IHSAA Girls Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Indiana University in Bloomington.

North’s team of Lindsay Welker, Sydney Dickerson, Jessi Conley, TaPring Goatee took fourth in a race featuring the nation’s fastest performance in the event this year. And Porter took second in the long jump and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles to pace the Patriots’ performance.

Ft. Wayne Northrop won the meet 60-51 over Lawrence Central. Bellmont finished third with 41 points, followed by Eastern (Greentown), led by Mental Attitude Award winner Bethany Neeley, in fifth place with 29 points and Terre Haute North with 25.

North’s 3,200 relay team ran the eight laps in 9 minutes and 8.17 seconds, which is a North school record. But Eastern of Greentown in Howard County won the race in 8:53.74, a state meet record and the nation’s fastest 3,200-relay time of the prep season.

“We’re satisfied with the time because we broke our own record of 9:17. Everybody performed well today. It’s good to be competing with people who run like that and to place fourth is fantastic,” Goatee said.

“We broke the school record by nine seconds. To have four teams under 9:10 is awesome,” North coach Mike Dason said of the Patriots’ run.

North’s Porter leaped 18 feet-11 3/4 to take second place in the long jump and later took eighth in 14.98 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

The showdown race of the day for the Wabash Valley was the 800-meter run, featuring North’s Welker, Goatee, Greencastle’s Colleen Weatherford and Shakamak’s Aleksey Green.

Weatherford led most of the race, but on the third turn of the second lap, Eastern (Greentown) Brittany Neeley caught her and won in a meet record time of 2:07.91.

North’s Goatee took foutrth in 2:13.56 and Welker, only a freshman, came in sixth in 2:14.77. Green finished 22nd in 2:23.45.

“I feel like I got out strong. I followed my plan and it didn’t work out exactly how I wanted,” Welker said.

Linton’s Micaela Hazlewood made two trips to the victory podium. Hazlewood took third in the discus with a throw of 142-3 and ninth in the shot put with a throw of 41-7.5 feet.
