TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North remained unbeaten in high school baseball, sweeping a doubleheader from Warren Central at Don Jennings Field on a sunny, breezy and chilly Saturday.

The Patriots moved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference with their 14-0 and 13-9 victories over the Warriors.

Austin Hicks was the winning pitcher in both games, tossing a five-inning no-hitter in the opener and coming on to get the final six outs of the nightcap. He issued one walk in the opener and struck out 10 batters while whiffing four of the six batters he faced in the second game.

Hicks is 3-0 for the season and has a save. “That was my fourth no-hitter, the first in high school. My best pitch was my fast ball,” said the junior.

T.J. Collett slammed two homers in the first game — and grand slam and a two-run shot — and drove in eight runs, giving the freshman 28 RBIs and eight homers for the season.

He was 0 for 2 in the second game and scored two runs.

Sam Wolf was hitting .615 going into the twinbill, unofficially leading the state in hitting, and didn’t do anything to hurt that mark. He was 2 for 4 in the first game with a double and was 3 for 4 in the second game.

Lane Dransfield was another leader on offense for the Patriots. The junior outfielder was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI in the opener and homered in the second game.

Gabe Sevigny and Hicks each had two hits in the first game and Sevigny took a turn on the mound in the second game. Jonathan Eilbracht had two hits and drove in two runs in the second game and Mackenzie Minger had two hits in the second game.

North jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap and was up 7-3 after three innings but trailed 9-8 after five frames. The Patriots got one run in the sixth and tallied four in the seventh to win.

Coach Shawn Turner was pleased with the day’s results.

“We had a really great day … things went about as well as they could in the first game. The second game started where we left off. Everything was fantastic and took our foot off the pedal a bit. Give credit to Warren Central for hanging in there after falling behind early,” he said.

“Warren Central put us on the mat. I was glad to see that we got back up to win. I brought back Hicks. He is a tough kid. He did what he does … a pretty good day’s work for the young man,” he added.

“I think right now we are seeing the ball about as well as you can on the high school level. And it’s not just a one-man show. We’re walking when we need to and getting a hit when we need it,” said Turner.

The Patriots will face McCutcheon on Thursday at Bob Warn Field with game time being 6 p.m. and will be at Lawrence North next Saturday.
