Lakers’ Green earns second win of year

BRAZIL — Shakamak used a strong pitching effort, a solid defense and a couple of timely hits to nip Northview in high school baseball on a cold and windy Friday night at Northview High School.

Shakamak’s Patrick Green held Northview to two runs, one earned, while going the distance for his second win of the season. The Lakers backed the righthander with one run in the first inning and two in the fifth while improving to 5-1 on the season.

“Patrick came out and did a really, really nice job. Northview always swings the bat really well and Patrick knew that he was not going to come out against teams like this and strike everybody out. We got to make some plays and the kids really stepped up,” Shakamak coach Chip Sweet said.

Green gave up eight hits, including three doubles, to Northview, struck out five, walked one batter (intentionally) and hit one.

Northview coach Scott McDonald was satisfied with the Knights’ hitting against Green, but five errors on defense, plus an error of his own made for unhappy finish.

“[Green’s] tough. Last year that guy owned us. I thought we swung the bat better against him tonight than the team we had last year,” McDonald said.

But McDonald was kicking himself for not stopping Craig Peters at second base for a one-out double in fifth inning.

With Shakamak leading 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Peters ripped a sure double into the right-field corner but tried to stretch the hit into a triple and was thrown out at third on a great relay from Shakamak right fielder Braxton Yeryar to second baseman Mark West to third baseman Brodie Crowe.

Northview’s Bo Stewart followed the out with a double to right-center field.

“This loss is on me, plain and simple. We didn’t make plays on defense, but bad coaching tonight for me,” McDonald said.

Shakamak put together eight hits against Northview’s Brock Smith and Trevor Hetrick.

“Brock has pitched great against Hamilton Southeastern, he pitched great tonight. I thought [Trevor] Hetrick came in and did a really nice job,” McDonald said.

Green led Shakamak’s attack with three hits, while Braden Yeryar had two hits.

Shakamak took a 1-0 lead in the first when Braden Yeryar led off with a wind-aided double over the center fielder’s head and scored on a one-out single by Green.

Northview went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Connor Ganly belted a one-out double and scored on a single by Peters, who went to second on a Shakamak throwing error. Peters moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out.

Shakamak took the lead in the fifth when Mark West reached base on a Northview error to start the inning. West stole second and scored on a one-out single by Dylan Collins. Collins came home on a two-out hit by Crowe.

Shakamak led 3-2 and still had bases loaded, but couldn’t get an insurance run home.

“We’ve had some situations where we just haven’t been getting a lot of big hits and that’s something we’re going to have to continue to work on; I think we will get better at it,” Sweet said.

But this game came down to the last out. Smith re-entered the batting order and led off with a single in the seventh. Devon Clark bunted Smith to second. With two out, Shakamak elected to intentionally walk Peters, who was already 3 for 3 with a double. It was the only walk Green gave up. The next Northview batter popped out to right field.
