Sullivan boys, South's Drew Cahill qualify for state golf finals

Montgomery, IN — Sullivan’s team and two players from the area extended their high school boys golf season by two days with their play on the links on Thursday.

The Arrows placed third to qualify for the state finals Tuesday and Wednesday, and Alec Davis of Greencastle  and Drew Cahill of Terre Haute South qualified as individuals in the Washington Regional played at Country Oaks in warm, mostly sunny conditions.

Plainfield shot 307 to claim the team championship. Evansville Memorial took second with 309 and Sullivan shot 310 for third to earn their slots in the finals to be played at The Legends of Indiana Course at Franklin.

The top three were followed in the top 10 by Vincennes Rivet with 311, Mooresville 315, Vincennes Lincoln 316, Castle 317, Greencastle 318, Evansville North 320 and Terre Haute South 322.

Dylan Holsclaw of Plainfield and Dylan Meyer of Evansville Central both shot par-72 to tie for indivdual honors and Holsclaw got a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim medalist honors.

Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan, Davis and Brady Sappenfield of Mooresville all shot 73 for second-low score while Drew Cahill, Preston French of Memorial and Isaiah Rose of Ben Davis were next with 74 scores.

Meyer, Davis, Drew Cahill, Sappenfield and Rose will be the individual qualifiers at Franklin.

Sullivan posted a 156 score after the first nine holes — teams started play on the front and back nines — and was tied for fourth in the team totals.

Coach Doug Boyd said going in that he felt his team had as good a chance as anyone to qualify for the finals.

“I thought if we played well, we would have a chance. We played well enough to do it. With most of the team back next year, this will be a great experience,” he said.

He said Riley Pirtle gave the Arrows “new life” on the second nine when he made four birdies on the first six holes. “I had five birdies for the day,” said Riley Pirtle after one of his best rounds of the season, shooting 76.

Nathan Pirtle and Colton Kuppler did what they always do in leading their team and Sullivan needed their 73 and 76, respectively, to nip Vincennes Rivet by a shot.

Nathan Pirtle had four birdies in his round in going 37-36. “The greens were a little soft and I had a little trouble with putts,” he said.

The junior qualified for the state as a freshman as an individual and is glad to be making the trip with his teammates this season. “It hasn’t hit me yet,” he said.

Drew Cahill went 35-39 to get his 74 and had two birdies, playing the last five holes 5-over-par. “I was happy with the way I hit the ball. I wish I could have finished stronger,” he said, but the South senior will be making his first trip to the state finals.

Davis was 38-35 in shooting his 73 and had three birdies. “I chipped in on No. 17 and that made me feel better after a bogey on No. 16. I thought the course played long and you didn’t get any roll … the greens, for the most part, were soft,” said the Greencastle senior.

Greencastle carded 318 to place eighth in the team totals and South was 10th with 322.

Greencastle coach Steve Paquin  commented on the Tiger Cubs’ season.

“It’s been a great season. We were 16-2 and took first place five times in tournaments. We averaged 39 shots in nine-hole matches,” he said.

He will lose three of his top four players. “I will miss them. They have been a great bunch of guys. I could not have asked for more from them. They practiced hard. They played hard,” he said.

South coach Chris Cassell will lose Ryan and Drew Cahill but everybody else is back from the tournament roster. He commented on Thursday’s play.

“It was pretty good considering how young we are. The key to next season will be for all of the players to play all day all summer,” he said.

Maybe they should play this at Valle Field. It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.

  • SPT 062814 DANE RUPSKA.jpg Gold surprises Black 35-12 in WVFCA All-Star Game

A dozen players from Terre Haute North were hoping that Saturday night’s Wabash Valley Football Coaches Association All-Star Game at Memorial Stadium would put a fitting exclamation point on their historic 2013 high school season.
But there were four other smaller schools in the Valley that also had excellent seasons, and Brian Oliver drafted all of them.
“I’m a coach at a small school,” said the Linton coach, whose first year resulted in an Indiana Class A semistate appearance and earned him the right to be an all-star coach opposite North’s Chris Barrett, “and I picked [Casey, North Vermillion and North Central, among others] because I know how much heart those schools play with.
“I knew those kids would come out tonight and give me everything they had, and they did,” he continued after a 35-12 victory by a Gold squad that had probably been considered an underdog.
