TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South’s force-the-tempo, in-your-face style involves 10 players rotating in and out in order to stay fresh and wear down opponents.
It’s fun to watch. It’s also fun to coach, the Braves’ Scott Ridge said after leading his team to a fourth straight victory in the quarterfinals of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic boys high school basketball tournament Friday night at Terre Haute North.
South held off a Casey rally to pull away in the final minutes for a 79-59 victory, putting the Braves into the tournament’s semifinals for the first time since 2008.
Freshman Jaylen Minnett has come off the bench to lead South in scoring twice this season, but it was his junior brother Tre Minnett who had the best game of his season to lead the Braves into the semifinals. Tre Minnett had 10 of his game-high 20 points in the first 12 minutes of action as South got out to a quick lead.
“That’s the great thing about playing 10 guys is we never know where it’s going to come from,” said Ridge, adding that the tournament atmosphere adds fuel to his team’s fire as well. “They like the big crowds, they like the energy, they feed off it. There’s extra energy there. They’re pumping each other up.”
The lead bounced back and forth in a wild first quarter, which Ridge didn’t mind at all. He just wanted to make sure the pace was quicker than it was when the Braves lost 51-49 at home to the Warriors a couple weeks prior.
Casey led 15-11 after an 11-2 run was capped off by a Brandon Wolfe 3-pointer. Wolfe, on pace to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer, led the Warriors with 19 points.
While it had a couple mistakes in the early going, Ridge liked the energy and pace his team forced upon the Warriors.
“That last game the total score was 100 points. We wanted that up around 120 or 130. The first half went exactly how we wanted, up and down, up and down, wild hectic pace. We wanted a lot of possessions, maybe a lot of fouls, get them winded, wear them down,” Ridge said.
To end the first quarter, Jaylen Minnett drove the middle of the lane for a smooth finish at the rim to put South ahead 21-19.
In the second quarter, Tre Minnett put the Braves ahead 26-21 with a 3-pointer to start a 26-4 run that spanned much of the second quarter. South built its lead as large as 41-23 when Jaylen Minnett assisted Tre Minnett on a 3-pointer on the left wing.
But it was defense making it happen for South. Connor Shipley picked up one of his team-high three steals and dished to Timmy Herrin for one of his three assists on the night. Herrin, who finished with 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, converted the 3-point play.
Tre Minnett chipped in with two of the Braves’ 12 steals on the evening.
“Defense is crucial,” Tre Minnett said. “When we’re doing our defensive slides, we like to yell out ‘defense is what? … Crucial.’ Defense is what’s getting us our wins so we just want to keep it up.
I like that we’re playing high energy, high-paced.”
Ridge was pleased to see Minnett come through.
“He was the best player on the court tonight. He can knock down shots and he’s quick. I wouldn’t want to guard him. He’s really picked up his defense from the start of the year,” Ridge said.
Casey point guard Zach Murphy had 14 points and two steals.
“We kind of let them get into those deep runs, 10-plus and that created a hole,” Murphy said. “We didn’t turn it over near as much in the second half and got back into it. We had a good gameplan coming in, but it didn’t work out.”
South will play Sullivan in one semifinal game tonight. It will be the first time Ridge will coach against his alma mater.

Terre Haute North did not bow out of the boys high school basketball tournament Tuesday night like a team on a seven-game losing streak.

Two sets of Eels win at WRV Sectional
There’ll be no Cinderella story in Dugger to end this boys high school basketball season, and a spirited upset bid also fell short Tuesday night at the Class A White River Valley Sectional.
Defensive pressure and depth made the difference in both games, as Eminence ended the Union season — perhaps its last, at least as a public school — by a 59-46 score and Clay City pulled away in the second half for a 53-44 win over Shakamak.
Paris knocks off 23-2 Clinton Central in overtime sectional thriller
Paris’ boys basketball team has learned a lot in a late-season run of success, but the one thing that set the Tigers apart on Tuesday in Class 2A Westville Sectional semifinal game was composure.

Our Wabash Valley teams won’t be represented when the Indiana girls state basketball finals return again to Hulman Center on March 8 (even though the Class 4A title will probably be decided this weekend when Lawrence North plays Bedford North Lawrence in a semistate game).
I wish some of our girls teams had been able to play longer for a purely selfish reason: that might have given me an opportunity to see one or two of their games.
South boys fall to Southport, finish regular season 8-14

Wilhelm's school-record freestyle victory leads South to second at swim sectional
Asked late Saturday afternoon about the Avon Sectional for boys high school swimming that had just ended, Jeff Thompson replied, “Well, it was fast.”
Understatement doesn’t always seem to be the Terre Haute South coach’s calling card, but that comment would qualify. Like the high tide that lifts all boats, the home team — ranked third in the state — had a fantastic meet, and pulled the rest of the field, particularly the three Vigo County teams, along with it.
Prep roundup: Sullivan boys lose close one to Evansville North
