BRAZIL — Terre Haute South got one Friday night in boys high school basketball.

It was anything but easy as the Braves rallied to best Center Grove 85-79 to get their first victory in four starts and even their Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference record at 1-1.

"The kids played with a lot of energy. This is the team we want to be," said South coach Scott Ridge after the game.

South led early but trailed 65-53 going into the fourth frame. The Braves scored the first 12 points — eight by Jeffrey Turner — for a 65-65 deadlock. The game was tied again at 67 and the Trojans took their last lead of the game at 69-67 on a bucket by Troy Vorhies.

Turner and Kevaris Gregory then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Braves were up 73-69. South's biggest lead down the stretch was 81-73 as the Braves cashed 10 free throws in the final 75 seconds.

Timmy Herrin had eight points in the first frame to boost South into a 22-21 lead after eight minutes. The score was tied three times in the second stanza before the Trojans closed with a 15-6 run and held a 44-35 lead at intermission.

Troy Vorhies had 13 points for the visitors in the period.

Center Grove outscored the Braves 21-18 in the third canto to take that 44-35 lead into the final period.

Turner led the Braves with 27 points, going 8 for 8 at the free-throw line, while Herrin had a career-high 23 points and team-high six rebounds.

Gregory had 13 points and three steals for South and Conner Shipley tallied 10.

Vorhies led 2-3 Center Grove with 24 points and 10 boards. Michael Benkert scored 20 and had seven rebounds and Tyler Bryant had 13 points.

"The players look to Jeffrey to score and he's becoming more vocal. Herrin had a career night and will be a great player. He is making up for lost time with a broken leg," said Ridge.

The Braves will begin a three-game week next Wednesday, entertaining the North Central Thunderbirds. Center Grove is at Martinsville tonight.
