GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Grooms leads 24-1 Marshall in first round of regional

Lions top Lawrenceville 60-30

MARSHALL, ILL. — Marshall began its quest for postseason girls basketball glory in resounding fashion as the once-beaten Lions trounced Lawrenceville 60-30 in its opening game of the Class 2A Marshall Regional on Tuesday.

Kaydie Grooms led the way for the 24-1 Lions with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Ariana Kuhn added 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Marshall will play Newton in Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game. Newton defeated Casey 69-39 in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Brittany Voils had 10 points to lead the Vikings, who finished 5-16.

Vermillion Sectional

• Riverton Parke 74, Turkey Run 17 — At Cayuga, Class A No. 6 Riverton Parke improved to 18-3 and will play Rockville at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a sectional semifinal game.



• Attica 56, Covington 38 — At Cayuga, the Red Ramblers improved to 15-6 and will play Class A No. 7 North Vermillion at 6 p.m. Friday in a sectional semifinal game.



Class A Clay City Sectional

• Union 38, Eminence 23 — At Clay City, Union improved to 9-11 and advanced to paly Shakamak at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a sectional semifinal game.
