Braves rebound from loss in big way

TERRE HAUTE — Attitude makes all the difference in a high school basketball team.

So after losing to Robinson on Thursday in the first round of the 13th annual Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic in the South gym, Terre Haute South coach Scott Ridge was looking at the Braves’ attitude Friday morning.

“We did not play well yesterday, but the kids came in early this morning and we got some work in and their attitude was right from the start, and that’s a good sign,” Ridge said.

And it showed in South’s 67-15 consolation-bracket win over Turkey Run on Friday. Ridge shook up the starting lineup, rotated players throughout the contest and the Braves were in total command all the way.

The Braves (4-6) scored the first six points of the game, led 15-2 after one quarter and 25-4 at halftime as Turkey Run struggled shooting the ball from the floor.

The winless Warriors were 1 of 12 from the field and turned the ball over 12 times in the opening 16 minutes.

Jeffrey Turner led South with 16 points and 10 rebounds while playing less than half the contest. Spence Tofaute netted 10 points. Guard Kevaris Gregory had a game-high four steals.

Turkey Run was led by Jake Amstutz with six points.

The scoreboard really didn’t matter to South most of the contest.

“We can still focus on playing hard, playing the right way, being in the right spots. We’ve got to get better at doing the right things and you only get so many chances to go out there and play, so we want to represent ourselves as the team we think we can be,” Ridge said.

South shot 42 percent (25 of 59) from the floor, compared to Turkey Run’s 10 percent (2 of 22).

“We ran some good sets. We got people the ball in the right spots. We’re trying to limit our turnovers. We’re still in double digits in turnovers (10). That’s not good. We’re looking to get a little bit better every day. I thought we got a little bit better today,” Ridge said.

South gets another chance to improve today against Monrovia at 1 p.m.
