Athletes, parents object to morning practice limits

By Sue Loughlin
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Some Vigo County School Corp. athletes and parents on Monday voiced objection to a new athletic program policy that sets limits on early morning practices.

The athletes and parents spoke to the Vigo County School Board at its regular meeting, although the board never acted on the policy.

Previously, there were no limits on morning practices for athletic teams. But the new policy, which took effect Monday, limits morning practice/conditioning to three times per school week, not earlier than 6:30 a.m.

Members of Terre Haute North Vigo’s swim team, including Katie Guell, objected to the change, which was approved Oct. 29 by the Secondary Athletic Council.

Under the former policy, swim team members practiced five mornings a week starting at 6 a.m. They also have practiced four afternoons a week and Saturdays.

The swimmers want the extra practice time to achieve their high goals, Guell said. “Our swimming program is so strong right now,” she said. She hopes to swim for a Big 10 or Big 12 college team, and other swimmers have similar goals.

Limiting that practice time may put some of the swimmers’ high goals out of reach, she said. Guell asked that the new policy be reversed, and several audience members showed their approval with applause.

Mick Newport, executive director of secondary education, said the new policy was adopted for the safety and well-being of students.

School Board member Gene Shike criticized the decision to limit morning practices and said it takes control away from coaches.

Board members did ask the Athletic Council to review the policy change related to morning practices and to report back.
