Valley teams get favorable high school baseball draws

TERRE HAUTE — Wabash Valley’s IHSAA baseball teams should be prepared to lift sectional hardware after Thursday’s favorable sectional draws put several teams in a good position to advance to the regional.

Three of the five Wabash Valley IHSAA sectionals are guaranteed to feature local teams in championship games, including the 4A Northview Sectional. Terre Haute South and host Northview drew the bye game, so either the Braves or the Knights will be participating in the championship game.

Terre Haute North will play Martinsville in the second of two opening round games at Northview, a rematch of last year’s 10-9 marathon, won by the Artesians well after midnight in a Mooresville Sectional semifinal.

The Northview field figures to be open with no ranked teams participating. The Wabash Valley schools have had a stranglehold on the area’s 4A sectional since 2004 as Northview, North and South won it in successive seasons.

Sullivan and West Vigo will both be in action during opening round games in the 3A Brown County Sectional as Sullivan plays defending champion Edgewood and West Vigo plays Owen Valley.

South Vermillion, new to the sectional field, but familiar as one of six Western Indiana Conference schools in the mix, plays Brown County in the third game of the seven-team field.

Unlike the 4A sectional, none of the Wabash Valley teams in the area’s 3A sectional have won since West Vigo’s 2004 championship.

Host Linton plays South Knox in the newly-configured, five-team 2A Linton Sectional. It’s a rematch of last year’s sectional championship — the Miners lost to South Knox 6-1, albeit with different teams participating. Bloomfield plays North Knox in the opener.

The Wabash Valley’s two ranked teams — Class A No. 3 Rockville and No. 9 Shakamak — are not destined to meet each in the regional as has been the case in previous years. The Riverton Parke Sectional champion is now routed into the northern half of the state. The Riverton Parke champion plays at the Lafayette Central Catholic champion. The Shakamak champion hosts the Loogootee champion.

Rockville, which lost to Covington in the championship game of last year’s Riverton Parke Sectional, drew the Trojans in the bye game of this year’s tournament. North Vermillion-Attica and Riverton Parke-Turkey Run highlight the first day of action.

Shakamak, six-time defending sectional champions, open the Shakamak Sectional against White River Valley, with the winner playing Clay City. Union and North Central play the second game.

Aside from the Riverton Parke champion, all other Wabash Valley sectional champions will host games in the June 3 regional should they advance.
