North boys, girls run away with Big Four track meet

By Steve Fields
Tribune-Star Correspondent

Brazil The Terre Haute North Patriots were heavy favorites going into the Big Four track and field meet Saturday at Northview High School. The Patriots did not disappoint.

Led by triple-event winners Shaun Smith, Brittany Dorsett and Amy Hamilton, North’s boys and girls teams each won nine firsts en route to their second straight Big Four championships.

In the boys meet, North beat South 103.5-74.5, followed by Northview with 47 points and West Vigo with 19. In the girls meet, the Patriots scored a 105-57 victory over Northview, followed by South with 43 and West Vigo with 39.

North’s Smith turned in two of the four meet-record performances in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Despite coming out of the blocks slower than he wanted, Smith won the 100 in 11.04 seconds, breaking the mark of 11.07 seconds he set last in 2006 as s sophomore.

Getting out of the blocks quicker in the 200 than he did in the 100, Smith sprinted to first in 22.19 seconds, breaking the old mark of 22.70 seconds set in 1999 by Darin Cain.

Smith finished the day by joining Conner Lentz, Ben King and Lucas Strassler to win the 1,600 relay in 3 minutes, 35.15 seconds.

“The 100 [meter dash] was an okay time. The 200 was an excellent time. The relay was an okay time [44.17],” Smith said.

Dorsett paced North’s girls with victories in the 100, the long jump and the 400 relay. She nipped teammate Ashley Burkins 13.17 seconds to 13.28 seconds in the 100. Dorsett leaped 15 feet, 101/2 inches, one-half inch longer than West Vigo’s Haleigh Sanders, to win the long jump.

The senior joined freshman Megan Wilkey and sophomores Alexa McFadden and Burkins to win the 4x100 in 52.09 seconds.

“[Dorsett] had a really good day,” North coach Mike Dason said.

North’s girls also got a meet-record performance from Hamilton in the 3,200-meter run. Hamilton turned eight laps around the 400-meter track in 11:26.56, breaking the meet mark of 11:34.63 she set last year.

Hamilton also won the 1,600-meter run in 5:24.65 and joined teammates Lindy Jones, Lindsey Hoff and Jordan Cresgy to win the 3,200 relay.

North’s Beth Liebler won an intense high jump competition with Northview’s Shandi Travis. Liebler cleared a season-best 5-feet-2 and nearly made 5-4. Travis, a junior, cleared 5-feet.

“I’ve been concentrating on my speed in practice. I just had to get over [5-2]. I ran as fast as I could,” Liebler said.

North’s Paige Rosselli nearly won two events, but settled for a first and second. Roselli won the shot put at 34-3 3/4, but Northview sophomore Samantha Soloman threw the discus 109-9 for first place.

Andrew Sullivan was one of the bright spots for South’s boys team, turning in a Big Four meet record in the 1,600-meter run. He won 4:27.22 breaking the old record of 4:29.40 set in 2002 by Bryce Smith.

The North-South rivalry showed up best in the boys’ throwing events. South got two firsts and a season-best performance from Josh Bridwell, and North’s Aaron Edwards took second in each case. South’s Bridwell threw the discus a career best 153-7 and won the shot put at 48-5. Edwards threw the discus 129-10 and the shot 46-11.

Northview’s boys got an impressive one-two finish in the 800 by Landry Moore and John Latta. Moore, who led all the way, won in 2:05.19 and Latta took second 2:06.38.

“I always try to start out really hard in the beginning and then just try to hold on [at the end] with whatever I have left in the last 200 [meters]. That’s when you really have to push it,” Moore said.

South got a one-two performance the pole vault. Junior Tyler Crooks cleared 12-0 for first place and teammate Dylan Bubeck, also a junior, cleared 11-6.

Sanders led West Vigo’s girl with a pair of firsts. The senior threatened the 400 meet record, falling just short in a time of 1:00.73. The record is 1:00.44. Sanders ran the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay nearly that quick, building an eight-second lead that teammates Kelsie Clark, Chelsea Hunt and Sarah Klotz made stand.

Pole vault was the futures event, as freshmen took the first three places and four of the five scoring positions. North freshman Amber Wilcox cleared 8-6 to win, followed by Northview freshmen Annie Smiley and Jessi Timberman.
