Black and Minority Health Fair July 18-21 in Indy

The 2013 INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair is July 18 to 21 at Indiana Convention Center, Hall D, in downtown Indianapolis.

The theme for this year’s Health Fair, “Good Health for All Generations,” promotes healthy living by making healthy decisions throughout a person’s entire life, no matter the age. Hoosiers are encouraged to take control and learn more about their health and consider their everyday choices that contribute to overall health and well being.

“With so many health problems affecting every age group, we wanted to incorporate a theme that truly reached all generations,” said Antoniette Holt, director, Indiana State Department of Health Office of Minority Health. “Our intention for the 2013 INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair is that there will be something for everyone and that people will be empowered and inspired to be their own best health advocate.”

Attendees will receive a multitude of free screenings, health information and giveaways. More than $1,000 worth of health screenings will be offered, including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, syphilis, HIV (Saturday only), body mass index, prostate, vision and dental screenings. Additionally, staff will offer body health analysis, stroke assessment and lead testing for children. New this year is hearing and foot screenings.

The opening ceremony is at 3 p.m. July 18 and will feature keynote speaker, chef and author Dr. Timothy Moore. “The Vegan Chef,” Moore, who once weighed 320 pounds, overcame diabetes and reached a healthy weight after becoming a holistic vegan.

Moore has written three books, two of which discuss health matters. His 2012 release, “47 Tips to Reverse Your Diabetes,” focuses on nutritional means to control the disease.
