Funds to provide defibrillators to rural communities

TERRE HAUTE — Union Hospital’s Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health has partnered with Vermillion and Parke counties in Indiana and Clark County in Illinois to better equip those rural communities to respond to life-threatening heart attack events.

The Lugar Center was recently awarded funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration to purchase several automated external defibrillators to be placed throughout those three counties.

An AED is a small portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can correct an irregular heart rhythm in a person who is having a heart attack. According to the American Heart Association, “a victim’s chance of surviving drops by 7-10 percent for every minute a normal heartbeat isn’t restored.”

In addition to purchasing the AEDs, the Lugar Center will work with community organizations and officials to place the devices in areas of the greatest need.

Through community partners, Union Hospital’s American Heart Association-certified Community Training Center also will coordinate training needed to operate the AEDs for medical professionals and community members.

Organizations in Parke or Vermillion counties in Indiana or Clark County in Illinois interested in hosting a community CPR/AED training event, or wishing more information on the project, can contact Angela Powell at apowell@uhhg.org or Jackie Mathis at jmmathis

uhhg.org at the Lugar Center.
