Special to the Tribune-Star
TERRE HAUTE —
Register now for the Out of the Darkness Walk scheduled 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 2 at Indiana State University.
Out of the Darkness Walks take place to honor loved ones, raise funds and help save lives.
They help participants create a community for those who are struggling with a depressive illness, who have attempted suicide or who have lost a loved one to suicide. It also brings together the family and friends of these individuals, and the medical/mental health community that cares for them.
Fifty percent of the money raised during the walk will go to fund research. The other half stays within the Indiana chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to provide free programs, trainings, materials and resources to Hoosiers.
Online registration closes at noon Nov. 1 for the Terre Haute walk; however, participants can register during check-in time from 9 to 10 a.m. Nov. 2.
Donation cut-off time is 12 a.m. Nov. 1.
Donations can be made online until Dec. 31, by mail or by text message. They can also be made in person at the registration tent on the day of the event, and will be added to the participant’s fundraising goal. Walkers must raise a minimum of $150 in donations to receive a 2013 walk shirt.
The AFSP requests that mailed check donations include the offline donation form with each check; the address is at the bottom of the form available at www.afsp.org.
Each donor can send a text message to donate $10 to their walk by texting AFSP HAUTE to 85944. Reply YES to confirm the gift. AFSP and HAUTE must be separated by a space for the donation to be processed.
