Union Hospital and Tabco to host 5K June 21 to fight childhood hunger

News Release

---- — Union Hospital and Tabco are sponsoring the inaugural Union Hospital 5K Run/Walk this summer to benefit the Vigo County School Corp. Backpack Program and the Union Hospital Inc. 26 Fund.

The race will be June 21 at the ISU Memorial Stadium. Runners and walkers are welcome.

In the Vigo County School Corp., 56.4 percent of children are receiving free or reduced-cost lunches through the federal school lunch program.

Based on this need, the school corporation’s backpack program was created. The program provides school children with calorie-dense foods to take home in their backpacks on weekends.

There are 350 backpacks distributed to 28 Vigo County schools every week.

The hospital’s 26 Fund helps hospital employees deal with the financial burden associated with short-term hardship due to catastrophe, accident or illness.

Interest-free loans are available to employees who apply based on need.

Entry fee is $15 for adults ($20 day of race), $10 for ages 6-15 ($15 day of race). A $5 per person discount is given to teams of three or more.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the race starts at 9. The race is manually timed.

Advance registration deadline is Friday and guarantees a Union Hospital drawstring backpack.

Registration forms are available at Pacesetter Sports or online at www.myunionhospital.org and www.wvrr.org.
