Teddy Bear picnics can help Alzheimer’s

TERRE HAUTE — With Alzheimer’s disease, a person can lose their intellectual, social and emotional abilities over time.

Research has found that dolls and teddy bears can help people with Alzheimer’s interact and communicate with others. Teddy bears have been known to stimulate memories and improve communications with others and overall improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

The “Teddy Bear Picnic” was created to provide the opportunity for the community to enhance the quality of life for those afflicted with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Teddy Bear Picnics are planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at several locations in Terre Haute. Attendees are asked to bring a gently used or new teddy bear/doll as a gift for an Alzheimer’s or dementia patient.

The picnics with refreshments will take place at:

• Bethesda Gardens, 1450 E. Crossing Blvd.

• Gentiva Hospice, 3401 S. Fourth St.

• Providence Healthcare at St. Mary-of-the-Woods

• Terre Haute Nursing and Rehab, 830 S. Sixth St.

• Westridge Healthcare, 125 W. Margaret Ave.

• Brownstone Manor, 66 S. 12th St.

• Cobblestone Crossings Health Campus, 1850 Howard Wayne Drive
