Child Passenger Safety Tech course coming up

TERRE HAUTE — A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration certification course for child passenger safety will be conducted from 8 AM to 5 PM on May 2, 3, 10, and 11. The course will take place at the Booker T. Washington Community Center in Terre Haute. In this four-day course you will learn about crash dynamics, injury prevention strategies, and child restraint selection and installation. This fast-paced and interactive course combines classroom instruction, hands-on work, and a community safety seat check-up event on the final day. Brandon Halleck, Executive Director of CHANCES for Indiana Youth will serve as lead instructor for the class.

About 80 percent of parents still misuse their child restraints and need assistance.  Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death to children ages 2 to 14 and the leading cause of injury-related death for children under 2. When installed and used correctly, child safety seats and safety belts can prevent injuries and save lives.  Anyone who works with or cares for children and has an interest in child safety would benefit from the course,. There is a definite need for more certified technicians in Terre Haute and surrounding areas.

All four days of the course must be attended to attain certification. Successful completion of this course certifies the individual as a CPS technician for 2 years. To register for the course, go to and click on find a class on the right hand side, or call Julie or Brandon at 232-5190 for more information. The fee for the course is $75 and can be paid online at registration. The class is limited to 12 students.
