Pace encourages workers to walk to work Oct. 12

TERRE HAUTE — Pace Community Action Agency has designated October as “Walktober,” part of Pace’s re-energized overall Employee Wellness Program. A segment of this month-long event includes a Walk to Work Day on Oct. 12. Employees will park their cars at designated places and walk to work that day.

Research shows that walking can help achieve a number of important health benefits: it can lower “bad” cholesterol and blood pressure; reduce risk of type 2 diabetes; help manage weight gain; and improve overall mental health.

Pace is putting a priority on wellness and wants to help build a healthier workforce. “We are committed to supporting employee wellness by making it easier for staff to learn about and use resources available to them,” said Marci Rowland, human resource manager.

Other local employers and community organizations are encouraged to participate in Walk to Work Day. Even if the trip to work is too long to walk, commuters are encouraged to park and walk a small part of their trip.

Community members can post their “Walktober” activities and events on Pace’s Facebook page.

The goal is not only to encourage others to get out and walk, but also to share with each other.
