Advice offered to adults caring for person with Parkinson’s

TERRE HAUTE — Millions of Americans find themselves caring for an ailing adult, and the ability to cope with that role often requires outside advice.

Adults caring for a person afflicted with Parkinson’s disease can hear such advice at a gathering Friday. The Terre Haute Parkinson’s Support Group will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. in Westminster Village at 1120 Davis Drive.

One in 4 households in the U.S. includes an adult caring for a person age 50 or older. A total of 25 million Americans act as such caregivers, according to the National Parkinson Foundation and the National Family Caregivers Association. The 85-and-over sector is the fastest growing in the U.S. population, and the number needing long-term care is expected to hit 14 million by 2020.

Parkinson’s afflicts an estimated 1.5 million Americans, or 2 percent of adults above age 60. No cure is known, but treatments and medicine can sometimes delay or curb its symptoms.

For more information about the Terre Haute group, contact organizer Loyal Bishop at 812-239-1900.
