White Violet Center cooking class Oct. 29 at Clabber Girl

Lack of basic cooking skills can make it difficult to live a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.

White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods ministry focused on care of Earth, will be offering a basic cooking class from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 29 at Clabber Girl Kitchen at Ninth and Cherry streets in Terre Haute.

“Veggies!” is the theme of the class. Basic terminology, cutting techniques and cooking styles for common vegetables will be highlighted.

The class will feature demonstrations, hands-on learning and the opportunity to sample finished products.

Registration is required prior to Tuesday. Cost is $40.

“One of the goals many people have in trying to live more sustainably is to eat healthier: to eat organically grown foods, to eat lower on the food chain, to buy locally. But most of these foods come as whole foods. You need to know how to cook or you can’t incorporate that part of living sustainably into your life,” said Robyn Morton, associate director of White Violet Center, who will instruct the class.

“It’s much cheaper to cook your own food than to buy already prepared foods or pre-cooked ingredients. It’s also much better for you to cook yourself.”

Morton said the class is geared toward beginners with little or no cooking experience. The class is open to all ages; participants under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

“The goal of the class is to help people get more comfortable in the kitchen so they can become good cooks. Cooking can be simple and fun, but you just need someone showing you how at first,” Morton said.
