Conference next month to focus on environmental issues’ effects on kids

TERRE HAUTE — Improving Kids’ Environment will host its 14th annual Improving Kids’ Environment Midwest Conference on Oct. 2 and 3 in the Marriott East Hotel at Indianapolis.

The conference, formerly known as the Healthy Homes and Childcare Conference, is only event in the region that specifically provides comprehensive and practical information about environmental threats that affect children’s health, according to a press release.

“It’s important to understand how environmental hazards affect children because the impact is different than adults,” said Dolores Weis, IKE executive director. “What might be a safe level of exposure to a toxin for an adult can have an irreversible, negative effect on a child. Our children are the future, so we need to do our part now to protect them.”

The conference will feature more than 30 speakers who are leading experts in environmental issues impacting children’s health. Keynote speakers for the event include Ruth Ann Norton, executive director of the Green and Healthy Homes Initiative; Dr. Paul Winchester, professor of clinical pediatrics; Nichelle Harriott, staff scientist at Beyond Pesticides; and Dr. Jalonne White-Newsome, federal policy analyst for WE ACT.

Early-bird registration for the event is available on IKE’s website at
