Get a hair cut and health screenings all in one stop

TERRE HAUTE — Visiting the barber shop today could mean more than just getting a haircut; it might save your life.

The Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males in conjunction with local commissions and community partners will be providing health screenings and education at more than 50 barbershops across the state.

In Terre Haute, the Minority Health Coalition is partnering with the Commission to provide screenings at two shops in town. Screenings will be provided from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Starting Line Up at 1009 Hulman St. Screenings will be provided from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hair With Flair at 2201 8th Ave. The glucose and blood pressure screenings are free of charge.

The Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative, along with numerous volunteers, seeks to enlighten black men to better understand cardiovascular diseases through screening and education. This year’s statewide initiative partners include Admiral Medical Supplies, Affecting Cancer Together and the Indiana Minority Health Coalition as well as the local Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County.

Recent figures from the Indiana Department of Health show black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana. Black men also suffer from prostate cancer at a higher level in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group.

Through black-owned barbershops, which represent a cultural institution of familiarity and trust, the initiative chose to provide health information and screenings in an environment where men are comfortable. This year, the goal is to screen more than 1,000 men across the 12 cities. Last year, there were nine participating cities and 748 screenings were performed.

This is the third year for the initiative and the first year that Terre Haute has been a participant.

“We at the Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County are excited to provide the volunteers to make this project possible in Terre Haute” said Dinah Farrington, executive director/program coordinator of MHCVC. “We are proud to partner with Hair With Flair and The Starting Lineup shops to screen and inform clients on vital health issues.”
