Indiana officials warn of dangers of blue-green algae

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana officials are warning residents about the dangers of possible high levels of blue-green algae at state reservoirs and lakes.

The Indiana State Department of Health says swimmers and boaters should take care in all recreational waters to avoid contact with algae.

Algae are commonly found in lakes and streams without concern, but state officials warn that the concentrated presence of blue-green algae can be linked to some adverse health effects. Exposure to blue-green algae may lead to rashes, skin and eye irritation, as well as nausea, stomach aches, and tingling in fingers and toes. People who experience symptoms after being in the water should contact a doctor.

The state Board of Animal Health says livestock, pets and wild animals can be poisoned by toxins produced by some algae blooms.
