Drive-up event on Oct. 19 to accept toxic items, white goods from Vigo residents

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County and the City of Terre Haute are sponsoring a “Tox Away and White Goods Collection Day” to allow Vigo County residents an opportunity to properly dispose of items on the “acceptable” list.

The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds.

A drive-up system will be used, and residents must remain in their vehicles. After drivers show identification as proof of residency, vehicles will be directed to a sorting area to be unloaded.

Acceptable items include: oil-based paint, polishes, solvents, aerosol cans, stains, degreasers, varnishes, fungicides, thinners, gasoline, preservatives, photography chemicals, glues/adhesives, mercury pesticides, flourescent bulbs, herbicides, refrigerators, pool chemicals, air conditioners, fertilizers, dehumidifiers, insecticides, freezers, engine cleaners, washers/dryers, pet care products, water heaters, deodorizers, stoves, disinfectants, anti-freeze, drain/oven cleaners, motor oil, turpentine and oil filters

Unacceptable items include: latex paint, agribusiness batteries, tires, fire extinguishers, commercial waste, industrial waste, gas cylinders and smoke detectors.
