Gearing up for ‘Basic Herbal Preparation’

TERRE HAUTE — White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, will conduct the annual Basic Herbal Preparation class from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the center at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Cost is $50 and includes light refreshments.

Robyn Morton, associate director for White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, will instruct the course.

Those taking part will learn basic techniques used for creating herbal preparations, including teas (both decoctions and infusions), salves, creams, tinctures and poultices. This will be the third time Morton has instructed the annual course.

“We will be making useful things,” Morton said. “This is not really herbal therapy. (We will not be) treating symptoms.”

Morton added the focus of the course will be preparation methods. However, she said there will be some discussion regarding herbal diagnostics.

“We’ll try to [offer] the information so that when spring and summer roll around, [participants] will be ready for those things,” Morton said.

The class will be instructed from the traditional Western Herbalism background. However, all holistic/herbal traditions (i.e., Traditional Chinese, Ayurvedic, Native American, etc.) will be welcome. No prior experience with herbalism is necessary, as the class is intended for beginners.

The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Advance registration is required. For more information, call Morton at 812-535-2932 or email rmorton@spsmw.org.
