April 26 sharing session to be therapeutic for Parkinson’s patients

TERRE HAUTE — Strength in numbers.

That concept underlies the theme of a gathering Friday, April 26 in Westminster Village. People afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, and friends and family who care for those ailing folks, will share their stories of their struggles and successes with the progressive disorder that touches more than 1 million American lives.

The Terre Haute Parkinson’s Support Group will meet that day from 10 to 11 a.m. in the facility at 1120 Davis Drive. The session is free and open to the public.

The exchange of personal experiences can be both therapeutic and informative, said Loyal Bishop, founder of the support group.

“It seems to reassure them that things can be helped,” Bishop said Tuesday morning.

Parkinson’s symptoms include slowness of movement, speech difficulties and tremors in the limbs. No cure is known, but treatments and medicines have helped slow the disease’s progression.

The Terre Haute organization is marking its sixth anniversary, having formed in April 2007. “It’s a good group of people,” Bishop said.

For more information, contact Bishop at 812-239-1900.
