Special Olympics Summer Games come to town June 6

TERRE HAUTE — The Special Olympics Summer Games will return to Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman June 6 to 8 in the event’s 45th year.

First staged in Indianapolis in 1969, the Summer Games is one of the most exciting and by far the largest competition that Special Olympics Indiana brings to the state, according to a press release.

More than 2,500 athletes will be accompanied and cheered on by 1,100 coaches, while nearly 1,200 event volunteers will help make Summer Games possible. Aside from three full days of fierce competition, there will be Olympic-style ceremonies, the Torch Run, a full-sized Olympic Town, a Health Festival and many other activities.

This year, the eight sports will include: aquatics, Bocce, bowling, cycling, horseshoes, powerlifting, track and field, and volleyball.

Opening ceremonies have taken place on the campus of Indiana State for more than 40 years. The event will begin at 7 p.m. June 6 in Hulman Center on the ISU campus. The event is free and encourages support and participation from the Terre Haute community and surrounding areas.

Terre Haute native and Olympic gold medalist Dr. Greg Bell will share his inspiring story to the Summer Games athletes, families, volunteers and coaches at the opening ceremonies. Bell won gold in the long jump during the 1956 Olympics. Additionally, the K9 crew, who has performed on “Good Morning America” and “Animal Planet,” along with Break Sk8, who has performed on “Disney’s Shake It Up” and “America’s Got Talent,” will be in attendance.

“Special Olympics Indiana has given more than 11,000 athletes opportunities to learn new skills, create lifelong friendships and brave new challenges —  alongside their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community of Indiana,” according to the press release.

All Summer Games events are free and open to the public.
