Minority Health Coalition to host health fair

TERRE HAUTE — The Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County will host the “Getting Healthy for the Holidays” Community Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Booker T. Washington Park Community Center gymnasium, 13th Street and College Avenue. Admission is free.

“Knowing your health status is the first step in conquering health challenges,” said Ashley Sanders, family program assistant at MHCVC. “Why wait to create a new year’s resolution of leading a healthier lifestyle and embarking on new career opportunities when you can do it now? Start today and get healthy for the holidays and beyond.”

Local providers at the fair will include AHEC, Purdue Extension, La Leche League, Regional Hospital, CODA, the Hamilton Center, Mental Health of America, the Vigo County Health Department, The Will Center, The Maple Center for Integrative Health, Sam’s Club, Union Hospital, Heartland Hospice, CASY, The Mollie R. Wheat Clinic, WorkOne, the Southern Illinois and Southwestern Indiana Respiratory Disease Program, Siebenmorgen Cancer Center, the YMCA, Connect 2 Help and Susan G. Komen. The event will also feature hourly door prizes including gift certificates to local merchants.

Organizations will provide information on health, mental health and careers; spirometry (breathing) tests; and health screenings for glucose, vision, blood pressure and cancer.

“Two exciting opportunities we are offering at this health fair are a limited number of free flu shots and a panel of [Affordable Care Act] navigators and agents who are prepared to assist people in enrolling in an affordable health care plan,” added Sanders. “Just come to the health fair. Your health is worth the time.”
