Vigo office part of National Public Health Week

TERRE HAUTE — Monday kicked off National Public Health Week in America, the 19th annual observance, during which issues important to improving the health of Indiana and the nation are emphasized.

Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of families and communities through promotion of healthy lifestyles, research for disease and injury prevention and detection and control of infectious diseases.

The mission of the Vigo County Health Department is to promote, protect and provide for the well being of the citizens in Vigo County.

Local events during National Public Health Week include the sixth annual Vigo County Employee Health Fair scheduled 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Government Annex at 147 Oak St.

The Vigo County Health Department will provide daily tips, local activities, and informational videos and education via its new social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.

This year’s National Public Health Week theme is, “Public Health: Start Here.” Topics include prevention as a nationwide priority, eating well and being the healthiest nation in one generation.

“Public health is … the force behind the clean water we drink, the immunizations we get and the seatbelts in our vehicles, said State Health Commissioner Dr. William VanNess.
