Paris Hospital transitions to digital mammography
Special to the Tribune-Star
PARIS, Ill. —
Beginning Wednesday, the digital revolution in the radiology department at Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center will expand with the arrival of digital mammography, according to Radiology Manager Don Held.
Most women are familiar with mammograms, which use low-dose X-ray systems to examine patients’ breasts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. A mammogram continues to serve as an important screening tool in early identification of breast cancers.
Digital mammography systems, however, differ in that they employ new technology that replaces the standard X-ray film previously used. Rather than using film, the system uses solid-state detectors to convert the X-rays into electrical signals; those signals in turn produce breast images which appear on a computer screen although images may also be printed on special film. The detectors in the system are similar to detectors used in digital cameras.
For a patient, a digital mammogram does not necessarily feel different from a conventional mammogram. For the radiologist who reads the results, however, the difference is clear. The major advantage is that the digital image can be manipulated. In other words, the doctor is able to “interact” with the image to bring out features for further examination.
Digital images provide not only more detail but also improved clarity. The positive result is that physicians can detect breast cancers more effectively, especially in younger women and denser breast tissue.
With digital mammography, the radiologic technologist can determine immediately whether or not the image is satisfactory. With X-ray film, the technologist must take the image elsewhere for viewing to decide if the pictures captured are sufficient for study, but with digital mammography, he/she can review and re-position the image at the time and study it to determine if additional images need to be taken before study by the radiologist. Also, fewer retakes are required with digital images overall because the detectors have the ability to accept wider variations of range and exposure.
Dan Gilbert, D.O., PCH/FMC general surgeon, noted, “We are pleased to add digital mammography to the women’s health services already offered here.
With both stereotactic breast biopsy, which was added to our services last spring, and digital mammography, the PCH/FMC emphasis on providing excellent women’s health services is clear. Furthermore, we provide these services for women conveniently close to home.”
Patients are being scheduled for mammograms with the new system beginning Wednesday afternoon.
