Indiana University Surgical Weight Management Center at Wishard invites the public to attend a free educational seminar about bariatric surgery, a medical procedure used to help those struggling with severe obesity achieve lasting weight loss. The seminar will be staged at noon July 18 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 750 Wabash Ave. The Key Program’s 31/2-hour educational seminar will cover:
• Requirements to be a candidate for surgery
• Surgical procedures
• The hospital stay
• Risks and benefits of surgery
• Postoperative diet
• Lifestyle changes
• Insurance issues.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to meet the IU Surgical Weight Management team from Wishard Health Services, Indianapolis, including the surgeons, nurses and a dietitian.
As the first in Indiana to perform a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, in July 2001, the center offers a comprehensive approach to care for patients with severe obesity.
Space in the Key Program is limited, so interested persons must call to register. Prospective patients are welcome to bring family members and friends. To register and for directions to the seminar, call 1-877-663-0082 and select option No. 1. Information is also available at www.IUBariatrics.org.
