Indy to host largest race for skin cancer research

Outrun the Sun, Inc. announces its partnership with national race sponsor, Neutrogena, for the 2007 Outrun the Sun race in Indianapolis.
The Outrun the Sun race has become the largest evening event of its kind in the country benefiting melanoma education and research. Additional sponsors of the 2007 event include SHAPE Magazine, national women’s magazine sponsor; Subaru, national car sponsor; and Dermatology, Inc., Indianapolis lead sponsor.
The 2007 race is the third annual event and will take place at 7 p.m. June 2 on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
It includes a 5-Mile run, 5K run/walk, or a 1-Mile fun walk through the streets of downtown Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Canal Walk. Post-race activities include live music, food, and kids’ runs.
The mission of Outrun the Sun, Inc. is to increase awareness of the risk factors for melanoma and other skin cancers and to raise money for medical research leading to treatments and a cure. It is estimated that in 2007, more than 60,000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma and over 8,000 will die of the disease. It is rising faster than any other cancer in terms of incidence rate and is the number one cancer in women ages 20-29. By 2010 it is estimated that one in 50 people will be diagnosed with the disease.
