Cold’s no problem: TH South opens Braves Baseball Bash with victory over New Haven

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South got off to a good start in the Braves Baseball Bash on Friday, defeating New Haven 3-1 in the first game of the competition played in windy, cold conditions.

Munster met Mt. Vernon in the second game and play resumes at 10 a.m. today with South facing  Mt. Vernon.

The Braves took a 1-0 lead in the first frame when Jacob Johnson reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on a single by Justin Jenkins.

New Haven tied it with its only run in the second stanza. Hayden Graham socked a leadoff double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Vance Shearer’s groundout.

South went ahead in the fourth. Jenkins rapped a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Tim Herrin’s infield single.

South closed out the scoring with an unearned run off New Haven starter Brayton Rudolph. Jenkins walked after Johnson led off with a single and scored on a throwing error by the New Haven catcher.

Logan Ames started for the Braves and got the mound win, going five full innings and pitching to one batter in the sixth.

Clayton Streeter got two outs and walked a batter and Jenkins came on to get the final out with a strikeout and pitched the seventh stanza to get the save.

Jenkins went 2 for 2, scored twice and drove in a run to lead the offense. Conner Shipley doubled for South’s only extra-base hit while Johnson singled and scored the other run.

New Haven had three hits. Graham had the double and scored the only run.

South coach Kyle Kraemer was glad to get the season off with a victory.

“It was about what you expect in the first game. I thought Logan did pretty well for five innings, then got into a little trouble in the fifth.

“We were able to get us to Jenkins. Justin did a great job,” he said.

“Twice, we had runners at third and did not get them home. We need to execute those situations better,” he added.
