From Terre Haute to the Major Leagues: Former Sycamore catcher teaming with MLB protege Stephen Strasburg
By Dennis Clark
The Tribune-Star
Nevin Ashley, a former Indiana State catcher, will play for the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League in October and November.
A teammate of Ashley’s will be pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the Washington Nationals’ recent No. 1 draft pick. Strasburg signed a multimillion-dollar contract with the Nationals’ organization earlier this week.
Ashley is in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, currently playing for its Class A-advanced affiliate Charlotte Stone Crabs. With just a few days left in the regular season, Ashley is batting .225 with three home runs and 35 RBIs.
Former ISU pitcher Ryan Tatusko struck out 11 batters for the Bakersfield Blaze on Monday. But he earned a no decision, allowing three earned runs in six innings vs. Stockton.
Earlier this season, Tatusko tossed a one-hit shutout.
News of former Indiana State or Wabash Valley-connected players last week:
Clint Barmes — Barmes was 5 for 24 with a home run, three RBIs and two stolen bases with Colorado.
Mitch Stetter — Stetter made two relief appearances with Milwaukee. On Monday, he tossed a scoreless inning in a 7-1 win at Washington. On Wednesday, the only batter he faced was hit by a pitch.
