Clabber Girl launches whole grain mixes with a ‘Challenge’

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — This month, Clabber Girl is introducing three whole grain mixes, including an Oatmeal Cinnamon cookie mix, Chocolate Chunk cookie mix and a Chocolate Brownie mix.

The baking icon is encouraging consumers to take on the Healthy Cheating Challenge by creating recipes with these mixes.

“We are always looking for opportunities to provide our customers with solutions,” said Teresa Shaffer, spokesperson for Clabber Girl. “Giving the consumers delicious ways to enjoy whole grains and sharing these recipes through a contest is a way to make healthy eating … or cheating fun.”

The Healthy Cheating Challenge recipe contest requires contestants to use one of the three whole-grain mixes to create a unique recipe. Each entry must include a “healthy cheating” tip.

“The recipes will be judged on creative use of Clabber Girl Whole Grain mixes, taste, appearance, compatibility with a healthy lifestyle, and relevance and creativity of Healthy Cheating tip,” Shaffer said.

Healthier eating trends are continually reshaping the food industry and the way that American consumers make their purchasing decisions.

Whole grain foods are a major trend unfolding across the world, continuously showing evidence linked to a reduced risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes and other health problems.

The rise of the whole grain trend is pertinent to the baking industry as consumers look for ways to enjoy sweets while following a healthier lifestyle.  Whole-grain baking mixes are an easy way to make healthier choices and still indulge in sweets.

The 2012 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults consume three to five servings of whole grains a day. One serving is 16 grams of whole grains.

The Clabber Girl mixes contain more than half of one serving of whole grains. One cookie or brownie can provide up to 16 percent of the recommended daily dietary fiber.

Clabber Girl Whole Grain mixes are available at participating Walmart stores and also at www.clabber

girl.com-store.

Contest participants must be 18 years old to enter. A picture of the finished product must be submitted with the entry form. The Healthy Cheating tip should be related to how the participant incorporates Healthy Cheating into living a healthier lifestyle.

The contest will run until April 15, and winners will be announced by June 15. The grand prize winner of the Healthy Cheating Challenge will receive a gift card for $1,000. Second prize will receive a $500 cash gift card and third prize a $250 cash gift card.
