Try out your recipe at Indiana State Fair

INDIANAPOLIS — Got a special recipe you just know is worthy of an award? Try it out in one of the Indiana State Fair’s recipe competitions.

Advance registration is required by July 1. The fair runs Aug. 2-18.

The contests:

• New — Scratch Bakers Cookie Challenge: Judging: 3 p.m. Aug. 2.

Do you love to bake from scratch? Using the premium quality of Gold Medal flour, contestants are asked to create any kind of cookie, any style, size or shape is welcome as long as it’s made from scratch. Top finishers receive $100, $50 and $25. Judging is based on appearance, flavor and texture. • Ghirardelli Chocolate Championship: Judging: 1 a.m. Aug. 6.

Using premium Ghirardelli 60 percent Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (and as much additional Ghirardelli baking chocolate as you like), create any type of bite-size delicacy to make you a big hit at the fair. First- and second-place finishers will win $150 and $50 each. Plus, the top three winners and a random contestant each will take home a Ghirardelli gift basket. Judging will be based on appearance, taste, creativity and ease of preparation. • Fleischmann’s Yeast — Best Baking Contest: Judging: 2 p.m. Aug. 6.

The Best Baking Contest helps a good cause: for each entry nationwide (between July and October) ACH Food Cos. will contribute $10 to the No Kid Hungry Campaign (up to $25,000) on behalf of contestants and its Fleischmann’s Yeast brand. Bake your best recipe using any type of Fleischmann’s Yeast. Prizes of $125, $50 and $25 await the top three winners in the first category. Think breads, coffee cakes and other baked goods; anything goes, from braids, baguettes and breadsticks, to flavorful focaccia, doughnuts or coffee cake. The second category will award $125 for the best dessert pizza with a homemade crust. Judging is based on flavor, creativity, texture, appearance and ease of preparation. • Pie Baking Championship: Judging: Noon Aug. 10.

The makers of the most delicious dessert pies and the most scrumptious savory pie will win awards and more. The competition calls for pies of all sizes, shapes and flavors. Just make your entry using Pillsbury refrigerated pie crusts. Prizes for the Top Dessert Pies are $200, $50 and $25; the Top Savory Pie will win $75. • Great American SPAM Championship: Contest Judging: Aug. 17 at noon

Create your most spectacular SPAM sandwich, from a simple grilled cheese to a sensational masterpiece, and you could end up a winner. Entrants will compete for prizes (up to $150 for first place), blue ribbons and a shot at the coveted grand prize, a trip to the SPAM Jam Waikiki Festival. Two categories will welcome both adults and youth. Focus on taste, creativity and presentation, and use 10 ingredients or less.
