TRIED 'N' TRUE: Tea party cookies, lemon and orange
When you get done with these cookies, you will have two different flavors. Our grandkids loved to make the balls and roll them in powered sugar. I can’t remember when I first got this recipe, but it has to have been at least 40 years ago.
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: You can’t tell there’s Velveeta in this fudge
At Christmastime we make sweets, candy, cookies, etc. When we were in State Soil and Water, we would bring cookies and candy for the last night at the meetings. A friend of mine, Marie Bunting, brought this fudge recipe and samples.

TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Serve Pecan Sour Cream Coffee Cake as breakfast appetizer
Last July I was with a friend of mine helping her with her home and dog. I was looking through her cookbooks and I saw this coffee cake recipe. This would be a good recipe for when we have family and friends overnight for Thanksgiving
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Try pudding alternative to pumpkin pie
When I belonged to Weight Watchers I tried to come up with a pudding that tasted as close to the pie as I could. I love this warm, but you can serve it cold. You’ll be surprised at how much it taste like the pie.
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Country Apples in the slow cooker
Can you believe we are almost into the holiday season? I have been getting requests for some easy recipes for the holidays using the slow cooker. Having everyone busy, busy, busy, we need all the help we can get.
RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS: Oct. 28, 2013
Thornton’s No. 80, 2330 S. Third St., (2 Critical, 2 Non-Critical) — Pitcher and wiping cloth found in handwash sink; Chute on ice machine found with debris.
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Caramel apple cake an alternative to just apples
This is the season for caramel apples. I love them. But I don’t get them. They are hard on the teeth, at least mine. I guess that is why I like this cake. And with apples in season now, it is so easy to make.

The Vigo County Health Department inspected the following food establishments from Sept. 30-Oct. 4:
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: An old trusted jerky recipe
This jerky recipe is old. My grandmother would dry it in the oven. I have a dehydrator. I have done the drying both ways.
- RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS: Oct. 14, 2013
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: A homemade recipe for summer sausage
I have been asked how to make summer sausage or jerky. With deer season upon us, I thought I would start with sausage.
This sausage is really good with the holidays coming up. You can also use hamburger if you don’t want deer meat.
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: Mother used paw-paws; today we use bananas
When we were young (there’s five of us), we couldn’t afford bananas very often. But we went to the woods to gather paw-paws. If you don’t know what paw-paws are, they taste like bananas.
TRIED ’N’ TRUE: A well-loved and well-used cookie recipe
Boy, this recipe has been used so much! I love this recipe. Lemon is one of my favorite flavors. I’ve taken this to nursing homes, church dinners and reunions. For nursing homes, don’t put in nuts. Make sure everyone knows if there are nuts in the cookies.
RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS: Sept. 23, 2013
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: This casserole recipe is great when used with zucchini
This is another recipe from Mary Hunter. I’ve tried this zucchini recipe and it was so good. We all liked it.
Husband Gene had carrots and green onions in his garden, so I used them. You can also use regular onions.
RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS: Sept. 16, 2013
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: It’s close: Use zucchini for Mock Apple Butter
Jim Hunter has given me so many of his wife’s recipes. With zucchini being so plentiful this time of year, I thought I’d share one of them. Jim found a scrapbook where she had collected recipes. She has written whether they are good, Jim’s favorite, or a “no-no.”

The Vigo County Health Department inspected the following food establishmens Aug. 12-16, 2013
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Cool down with this Paper Cup Salad
When summer heats up, we want something to cool us that isn’t unhealthy for us. I have fixed this salad for years. I took it into the fields when our boys were small and later when our grandkids worked the fields.
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Take this Grape Salad to a picnic
A couple of years ago, we had a picnic at a friend’s home. Someone brought salad. Boy, was that good. Everyone was asking who made the salad.
Then we all wanted her recipe.
RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS: Aug. 12, 2013
The Vigo County Health Department inspected the following food establishments July 22-26:
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Here’s the perfect dip to use with lime chips
Amanda Condit gave me a cookbook from her church called “Pleasures from the Good Earth,” by St. Mary’s Parish & Friends. I love this dip for chips. But it calls for the lime chips. Since I didn’t have them, I used the regular ones. As grandkids say, it’s a keeper.
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Glazed (fresh) pineapple on the grill
This recipe is good for get-togethers. Using fresh pineapple is so much better; be sure to remove the core.
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Grandmother Grace’s 5 Cup Salad recipe
When I was young, my grandmother, Grace Nichols, always made this 5 Cup Salad. She used to take it everywhere she went. When my kids came along they ate everything in it but the coconut. They said they didn’t like coconut. Well, she cut it so fine they couldn’t detect it.
TRIED ‘N’ TRUE: Try this Spaghetti Salad for a quick summer meal
Don’t know how I came up with this recipe. I have used any size spaghetti, even the spaghetti squash. Make this and let it set for three or four hours or over night. You can adjust the veggies to your taste.
