Tried 'n' True: Get more of those spicy apples you crave

By Jackie Lindley
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Have you ever been to a restaurant where they served spiced apples? Then you think to yourself, “man, I would like to have more” and wish you could make something like it at home?

Both my grandmothers always made cooked apples. Sometimes they would spice them up. For this recipe, I combined two recipes and added my own personal touch. You can use sweetener instead of sugar (I have to because my husband, Gene, is diabetic).

Remember to use two different brands of sweetener to mask any after taste.

Spiced Apples

6 to 8 apples

1 tablespoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of cloves

1 teaspoon of vanilla

1-1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch

1/4 cup of red hots candy

1 cup of sugar or sweetener

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon of salt

• Peel and core apples into chunks. (Can slice in rings just peel and core). Cover apples with water, add all ingredients except cornstarch. When apples are done, mix cornstarch with1/4 cup of water. Stir into spiced apples to thicken sauce. Can serve hot or cold. Great with pork or poultry. Also good with ice cream.
