“Supermarket Smarts,” featuring the expertise of dietitians from Terre Haute Regional Hospital, will be staged at Baesler’s Market at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Supermarket Smarts provides attendees with aisle-by-aisle advice regarding the health and nutrition benefits of foods at the supermarket. The dietitians teach attendees the finer points of reading labels and looking for smart purchases.
“We ask people in the group if they have specific concerns, such as diabetes or heart problems, and we address those needs specifically,” said Jenni Bowling, registered dietitian. “We show how to understand the requirements for things like cholesterol and sodium.”
Calorie content also is discussed. For foods such as cereals, frozen meals, ice creams and margarines, several brands are lined up in order from lowest calorie count to highest. “It may say the word ‘healthy’ on the label, but it doesn’t always mean it is,” Bowling said.
Admission for Supermarket Smarts is $5. Calling ahead to reserve a spot is required, as attendance is limited. To register for the session, call Jenni Bowling at (812) 237-1161 or 1-800-678-8474, Ext. 2160.
