FLASHPOINT: Planned Parenthood’s dangerous sex coaching not worthy of funding

TERRE HAUTE — Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky’s CEO, Betty Cockrum, recently waged a public relations campaign in newspapers across the state. Cockrum touted the need for Planned Parenthood’s version of sex education for Hoosier teens.

Cockrum called for sex education that includes “an abstinence-plus curriculum.” Parents of Hoosier children deserve to know what is included in the “plus.” If a recent conservation between a Planned Parenthood employee and a 15-year-old is any indication, the “plus” portion is dark, deviant and dangerous.

In an undercover video released June 11 by Live Action, an employee at Planned Parenthood’s Midtown Health Clinic in Indianapolis coached a 15-year-old on sadomasochism, purchasing and using sex toys, watching pornography and other sexual activity far too graphic for this column.

In many instances, the employee recounted her own sexual experiences for the girl. She advised the girl on finding more sex tips online. And when the girl confessed she sometimes had unprotected sex, the employee offered no rebuke.

Sadly, this type of sex education by Planned Parenthood is no isolated incident. Search YouTube and you’ll find a Planned Parenthood-produced video promoting bondage and sadomasochism to teens. A Planned Parenthood webpage for teens instructs readers on anal sex. And Live Action claims they have similar videos to the one recorded in Indianapolis being released soon. Will Planned Parenthood cross every line when it comes to talking to teens about sex?

As a parent, I don’t want Planned Parenthood teaching my kids, or anyone else’s kids, about sex. Encouraging violent sexual activity sets up our youth for disaster. From the potential for sexually transmitted diseases and physical injuries, to broken relationships and unintended pregnancies, the risk is far too great.

Given what we know about Planned Parenthood’s true brand of sex education, parents, educators and legislators have a responsibility to keep the organization out of our classrooms. We should also question how they carry on this type of instruction. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky is the recipient of more than $1.6 million in federal funds, divvied out by the non-profit group, Indiana Family Health Council. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky also receives funds as a Medicaid provider and receives support from the national Planned Parenthood organization. In fiscal year 2012-2013, national Planned Parenthood received more than $540 million in tax dollars, or nearly $1.5 million per day.

It is time to cut off taxpayer dollars to this extreme organization. We called on Indiana’s federal representatives to take action. Sen. Joe Donnelly told an Indiana media outlet that the conversation in the video was not appropriate for a 15-year-old. His position gives us hope that he will take legislative action against the organization before they victimize other young girls with our tax dollars.

We ask Sen. Donnelly, along with Reps. Susan Brooks, Pete Visclosky and Andre Carson, to join their colleagues in cosponsoring bills to remove Planned Parenthood’s funding. We also ask you to speak up on this issue. Let your elected officials know that you will not stand for taxpayer funds promoting dangerous sexual activity to our youth. You can contact your representatives personally or you can sign a petition to legislators on our website.

We don’t expect that Planned Parenthood will ever cease sexualizing our youth, but they should no longer do it with our tax dollars.
