View Community School of the Arts’ steel sculpture exhibition through June 19

Indiana State University’s Community School of the Arts presents an art exhibition in Turman Art Gallery through June 19.

The exhibition features the work of CSA’s Metal Sculpture for Adults class participants Pam Anshutz, April Badger, John Edwards, Bruce Fiscus, Jo Anne Fiscus, John MacDonald, Shelley MacDonald, Edie Richards and Mike Swagerle.

The Metal Sculpture class is for beginning to intermediate level students. No prior sculpture or welding experience is necessary. Taught by Mike Egy in ISU’s metal, wood and ceramics studios, the emphasis of the class is the exploration of three-dimensional form. Students learn how monumental sculpture is produced through the creation of small-scale models, also called “maquettes.” Students are introduced to the fundamental techniques of welding, cutting, grinding and shaping of steel to produce works of art.

The Community School of the Arts is an Indiana State Unbounded Possibilities initiative. The CSA provides the communities of the Wabash Valley and surrounding areas the opportunity to participate in non-credit classes in music, theater and visual art. The CSA welcomes students of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels to experience professional and affordable instruction in the performing and fine arts.

Providing hands-on arts-learning experiences for infants through senior citizens, the CSA enables ISU students who are majoring in the arts outstanding opportunities for experiential learning through teaching. Addressing societal needs, the CSA offers scholarships to families in need of financial assistance, enabling citizens from all walks of life to enjoy arts programming. Arts classes and music lessons are conducted on campus and outreach programs at public schools and community centers.

The sculpture exhibition is free and open to the public. The Turman Gallery is at 649 Chestnut St., the first floor in the Fine Arts Building on the ISU campus. For more information, call Community School of the Arts at 812-237-2528 or visit www.unboundedpossibilities.com/csa.
