Scary sights and fun-filled nights: Valley offers something for everyone this Halloween

TERRE HAUTE — What: City of Terre Haute trick-or-treating

When: Through 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

What: Free family fun with trick-or-treating and a parade

When: 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Honey Creek Mall, participating stores in the mall

Note: Enter at any mall entrance and visit participating stores for candy and treats. Additional information on event specifics can be found at


What: Halloween Book Give-away

When: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Main and West branches of the Vigo County Public Library

Note: Costumed kids are invited to stop by for the best treat — a new book.


What: Halloween light show set to music

When: From dusk to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and dusk to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday.

Where: 2242 Washington Ave. (23rd and Washington streets)

Note: Lights move to the music of nine songs with a minute break in between. Donations are appreciated; a barrel will be available for nonperishable food items for 14th and Chestnut Community Center.


What: “A Haunting on Westfield,” haunted garage

When: 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

Where: 2 miles west of West Vigo High School on Sarah Myers Drive in Westfield Subdivision; look for the signs.

Note: The haunt is in its fourth year. This is a free haunted house, however donations for the junior class at West Vigo High School are appreciated. All children are given a treat even if they choose not to walk through the haunt.


What: Castle Lorey

Where: 1815 S. 29th St.

When: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

Note: The haunt is free and is mainly for ages 1-16. Parents are always welcome.


What: The Sophomore-Freshman Leadership Council from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will be hosting a Children’s Halloween Bash.

When: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday

Where: LeFer Hall at SMWC.

Note: Children’s games and trick-or-treating are part of the festivities.


What: An outside “yard haunt” and trick-or-treating destination that will include animatronic characters, interactive props, a graveyard, an electric chair, a 10-foot-tall animatronic grim reaper, fog machines, strobe lights, lights synchronized to music, and several actors in costume.

When: 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday

Note: All are welcome, but only those in costume will receive candy.  


What: Shattered Nightmares Haunted House

Where: 1011 Third Ave. (the building will be lit up in green lights)

This is our third year and we have changed a lot and added many new scares.

When: 7 p.m. to midnight today through Sunday and again on Wednesday.

Note: Admission is $8.


What: Monte Carlo Masquerade

When: 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday

Where: The Ohio Building

Tickets: $40 each, or a package of eight for $300

Note: Play casino-style games, dance to the music of Octane, bid on silent auction items and enjoy appetizers and a cash bar. Costumes are not required, but are welcome. What: Halloween laser show at planetarium

Where: Allen Memorial Planetarium at Terre Haute South Vigo High School

When: 6:30 p.m. Friday

Cost is $4 for adults and $2 for age 12 and younger.

What: The Sullivan County Community Hospital Foundation Monster Dash 5K/3K/2 Mile Walk

Where: On the Sullivan County Community Hospital Campus, 2200 N. Section St.

Note: Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with the 5K/2 Mile at 9 a.m. and the 3K at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costume for adults and children, top male and top female in the race as well as the top performers in each age group. What: The YMCA of Clay County Monster Dash 5K Walk/Run and Family Fun Night

When: Saturday (6:30 p.m. race time)

Where: YMCA, Indiana 59, north of Brazil

Note: Chili will be served in the community room from 4 to 6 p.m. by the “Chili Witch.” T-shirts and race numbers for all runners may be picked up the day of the race from 5 to 6:15 p.m. The number of T-shirts will be limited. The first 100 runners will receive medals. Awards for best male, female and couple costumes will be given out. All proceeds will go toward purchasing fitness equipment. Visit


What: The Terre Haute Children’s Museum will be transformed into a not-so-scary building filled with ghostly fun, games and activities during the “Little Museum of Horrors” Halloween party.

What: Masquerade Ball to benefit Toys for Tots

Where: Excalibur Banquet Hall, 212 W. National Ave., West Terre Haute.

Note: The event, titled Masque Of The Red Death Charity Ball, will feature entertainment by DJ Gigante and drinks provided by Ambrosini’s in Terre Haute. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door, if available.

What: Toyota of Terre Haute Trunk or Treat

When: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday

Where: Toyota of Terre Haute is 3.5 miles south of Interstate 70 on U.S. 41.

Bring a decorated trunk for family friendly and safe trick-or-treating, or compete in the costume and pumpkin carving contests. Where: Lincoln Trail College in Robinson, Ill.

Note: The college will be open for public trick-or-treating in its three main buildings. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free.


What: Campground Haunted Trail

Where: Horseshoe Lakes/Thousand Trails campground (12962 S. 225 West, Clinton)

When: 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday

Note: Visitors to the haunted trail will start with ghost stories around a bonfire at the Family Center, take a hayride to the beginning of the Haunted Trail, walk the 1/2 mile of the trail with a guide, and take a hayride back to the Family Center/bonfire area. Small children can participate in crafts and activities. The fee is $10 per car load.


What: “Bats and Boo…ks” celebration

When: 6 to 8 p.m. today

Where: Clinton Public Library

Note: Children are invited to come in costume for a night of not-so-scary stories. Guests are asked to bring one carved or decorated pumpkin per family, to be judged as funniest, scariest, prettiest, most creative and most unusual. There will be a costume contest as well, along with a movie, crafts and treats.  


What: Young Adult Department Halloween Party

When: 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Clinton Public Library

Note: There will be a movie, games and refreshments. Costumes are encouraged but not required.


What: Howl at the Moon (10K night trail run)

When: Beginning at 6:30 p.m. CDT Saturday (spook walk begins at 7:30 p.m., the 10K run at 8)

Where: Mill Creek Park, west of Marshall, Ill.

Where: Full Gospel Assembly of God, 7205 N. Clinton Road

Note: There will be candy, prizes, face painting and a hayride. The event is open to all ages and free to the community. Drinks (hot chocolate, cider, water) will be available for purchase, with proceeds going to the Full Gospel Building Fund. For more information call the church office at (812) 234-5020.

Where: South Campus of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 3050 Davis Drive.

Note: A meal will be served that includes hot dogs, chips and dessert. The event will benefit the 14th and Chestnut Community Center with donations of new socks and underwear. Donations will also be accepted through voting for your favorite pumpkin at the pumpkin decorating contest to benefit the center’s “Keep the Fires Burnin’ fund” to help offset heating costs.

When: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday

Where: North Campus of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 1075 N. Fruitridge Ave.

Note: Treats will be given to participants and a free short-menu dinner will be served in the church. In case of inclimate weather, treats will be distributed inside.
