Looking Back: 1996: MCL Cafeteria opens in Meadows shopping center

Dorothy Jerse looks back at local history from 10, 25 and 50 years ago as reported in the Tribune and Tribune-Star.


--The new Idle Creek Golf Course, developed by Rick Jenkins south of the city, was now open for play. Jack Keidel was the superintendent.

--Gibault School for Boys, south of Terre Haute, was celebrating its 75th year of giving troubled boys a second chance. The school had been dedicated Oct. 9, 1921.

--MCL Cafeteria opened in The Meadows shopping center.

--Tiffany Wey, Terre Haute North Vigo High School senior, was chosen to reign as 1996 Miss Action Track.

--U.S. Postal Service officials approved $14.5 million funding for a processing and distribution facility in Terre Haute.

--Nearly 300 Indiana law enforcement officials participated in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise funds for the Special Olympics. It was a 78-mile run from Indianapolis to the Indiana State University campus.

--Bruce Kasameyer celebrated the grand opening of his antique store at 5149 S. U.S. 41 in Dixie Bee Plaza.


--The Indiana Special Olympics named Mari Hulman George as honorary chairman and Bobby Knight as honorary head coach.

--The Charles T. Hyte Community Center bought 100 pairs of roller skates to offer a skating program two nights each week. Alfonso Harris was the center director.

--Pat Rady, Terre Haute South Vigo High School head basketball coach, was the director of the first Wabash Valley Basketball School at the Terre Haute Boys Club.

--Members of the United Mine Workers union approved a contract to end the 72-day nationwide soft coal strike, allowing local miners to return to their jobs.

--AP&S; Clinic announced the addition of Drs. Kenneth M. Spicklemire, James T. Walsh and Edward L. Davis to its staff of physicians.

--The members and directors of the Bridge Center appointed Jim Gormong as club manager.


--American Brass Co. officials from Waterbury, Conn., were in Terre Haute for groundbreaking ceremonies of its Anaconda integrated aluminum mill north of the city.
