Riverfront to be site of ‘Artistry and Rhythm’ music and arts event

TERRE HAUTE — Make plans to join Arts Illiana, the Wabash Valley Art Guild and the Terre Haute Community Band on Aug. 3 for a day of visual and musical arts as the year-long celebration of the Wabash River continues with “Artistry and Rhythm.”

Fairbanks Park will provide a picturesque backdrop for Valley artists to exhibit and sell their work.

Visitors to the park will be able to browse through booths filled with a wide variety of original and one-of-a-kind fine art, including paintings, handmade cards, painted gourds, wood carvings and ceramics.

The Wabash Valley Art Guild is still accepting registrations from artists to be a part of this “Art in the Park” event, which is traditionally staged in Deming Park.

Artists who have registered for the event will be able to display their work in the Blumberg Shelter or reserve a spot on the park grounds and set up their own booth.

Art in the Park will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Brochures and registration forms are available at under the “Opportunities” tab on the homepage.

In addition to Art in the Park, an invitation is extended to artists to “Paint the River,” a “plein air” paint-out event in which artists will register their canvases or other materials from 10 to 11 a.m. and then choose a spot in the park along the banks of the Wabash to paint the river.

At 4 p.m. the paintings will be juried for possible inclusion in a future exhibition. Artists living in the Wabash Valley and beyond are encouraged to grab their paints, brush and canvas, their sunscreen, easel and stool, and be a part of this historic celebration.

For more information about the paint-out, call 812-235-5007.

Arts Illiana also will be hosting a fish fry tent, with food available for lunch or dinner.

On the way to Fairbanks Park, patrons can stop by Fifth Street and Wabash Avenue for the Year of the River Mural dedication and meet the artists, the sponsors and the students who have made the project possible.

To finish the day, the Terre Haute Community Band is scheduled to perform its “Artistry and Rhythm” concert. The Aug. 3 program will include such titles as “The Blue Tango,” “Blue Goose Rag,” “Amber Waves of Grain” and “Purple Carnival.” The concert is free.
