Bluegrass, concert musicians set to entertain

Fish fry, Art Chatter also kick off August events

Blues and Bluegrass Music Fest coming up

The third annual Holy Rosary Blues and Bluegrass Music Festival is set for 6 p.m. Aug. 4 in Schelley Hall just east of the Seelyville stoplight on the north side of U.S. 40.

The free event will feature Louie Popejoy and Solly Burton, among others, and jam sessions. Attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in the music.

Food and drinks will be served. Lawn chairs welcome. Free will donations to benefit Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Main Street north of U.S. 40 will be accepted.

Brazil Concert Band to perform

The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, presents London 2012 , Aug. 5 at Forest Park, rain or shine.

With the London 2012 Olympics in full swing, the BCB will present band music heard around the world. Since 1896, brass bands and military bands have been important features of the Olympics, playing national anthems and international marches.

The BCB German Band will entertain beginning at 7:15 p.m. followed by the entire Brazil Concert Band at 8 p.m.

From Great Britain the BCB will offer “Michelle” made famous by the Beatles, “The Royal Welch Fusiliers,” which is Sousa’s salute to Wales, and Anderson’s “The Rakes of Mallow.”

The Bourgeois version of “The March of the Belgian Paratroopers,” Hansson’s Norwegian work “Valdres” and French composer Saint-Saens’ “Pas Redouble” are slated.

From the German speaking nations, the BCB will perform “March Militaire No. 1” by Schubert, “Overture Militaire” by Haydn and Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.”

Two great, but seldom heard American marches, will open and close the show, “Transcontinental March” by Hughes and “Stepping Along” by Goldman.

Fish fry coming up at Youth Campground

The Friendly Benwood Community Christian Youth Campground will be conducting an all-you-can-eat County Rhodes Fish Fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at the campground, 525 East County Road 1200 North (Rio Grande Road), or 1.5 miles east of Shopmeyer Farm Supply off of Indiana 59 north of Brazil.

On the menu will be catfish, walleye, popcorn shrimp, chicken strips and all the sides. Dessert will be available at an extra cost. Cost is $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for kids 12 and under.
