‘Sweet Sensations: Country Jam’ fundraiser hopes to round up support for Vigo County Historical Society

TERRE HAUTE — Community members are encouraged to pull on their western boots, don their cowboy hats and mosey on over to the Ohio Building on May 4 for “Sweet Sensations: Country Jam,” a fundraiser for the Vigo County Historical Society, and a program of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Indiana State University.

Proceeds from tickets will support the Society as its Historical Museum moves to Wabash Avenue from South Sixth Street. The evening’s entertainment will feature country-western star Ty Brown on the main floor, Judson Hill and Abbi Scott on the second floor and the Flying Jackson Cousins on the rooftop.

Brown first gained popularity after appearing as a contestant on ABC’s “The Bachelorette.” On the second episode of that reality show, he sang a song he wrote titled “Livin’ in the Moment,” which put him on the list of the biggest names in the music industry and propelled him to instant success. Brown now fronts a Nashville-based band, featuring Terre Haute’s Marc Rogers on lead guitar.

Judson Hill is a Terre Haute-based country band, “driven by the powerful vocals of Alexa McFadden backed by brothers Marc Rogers Jr. (lead guitar) and John Rogers (drums), and Steven Lee (bass),” states the band’s online bio.

“With influences ranging from Keith Urban to Lady Antebellum the band has created an energetic and dynamic sound that is fresh and new, but instantly comfortable for both country and pop fans alike.”

Put Miranda Lambert, Gretchen Wilson and Kelly Pickler in a blender and out splatters Hoosier Abbi Scott, a petite blond from Clinton, Ind., who calls Nashville her part-time home, states Scott’s online bio. She has opened up for artists Lee Brice, Jana Kramer, DJ Miller and David Bradley.

The Flying Jackson Cousins — Eric Holliday Jackson and Trever Jackson — grew up in Spelterville, just north of Terre Haute. According to their Facebook page, the fourth-generation musicians began playing together for friends and family before they were even in their teens.

Their fathers, Bubby (Brian) Jackson and Rocky Jackson, were longtime musicians, with their band, Small Change. On occasions, Eric and Trever would travel along and watch. Trever’s Great-grandfather Pope also played in a band on the very banjo Trever plays to this day. Trever also plays guitar and lap steel, and Eric does vocals and plays guitar. When the whole band plays, it adds John Ford on bass and Al Doti on drums.

Line dance lessons will be available at the event, as well as a silent auction. An outdoor cookout with all the trimmings will be presented by Terre Haute restaurant Rick’s Smokehouse and Grill.

The Ohio Building is at 670 Ohio St. Doors open at 6 p.m. with line dancing from 7 to 8 and music from 8 to 11. Cost is $50 per person, $400 for a table of eight and $1,000 for corporate sponsorships, and includes dinner and access to entertainment.

Tickets are available by phone at 812-237-2345 or online at www.indstate.edu/olli.
