CHRIS DAVIES: While you’re waiting on a quick fix for weight loss, a couple suggestions …

By now you may have heard about a wonder supplement Cortislim. Annoying Cortislim ads claim to rid your body of unwanted belly fat by suppressing the stress hormone cortisol. Like other supplements before, their claims were not proven.

The Federal Trade Commission served the manufacturer with a warrant demanding they stop making false claims. Since supplements are not FDA regulated, the manufacturers can make any claim regardless of how outrageous they may be. Cortislim ads were considered false and misleading. You may notice it was not the FDA that made the request, but the FTC.

Conversely, the manufacturer of Vioxx pulled it from the market because research deemed it unsafe. Some say the FDA should not have approved Vioxx. All FDA regulated pharmaceutical products are stringently tested before hitting pharmacy shelves. However, many have side effects that may not surface until they have been on the market for a number of years. Companies collect data on products to ensure continued safety.

Unlike the supplement industry, the FDA monitors and approves ads and marketing practices of pharmaceutical products and companies. The FDA requires a product to be safe and marketed in a reasonably ethical manner. The supplement industry has no such guidelines in place to protect the consumer.

You should cast a skeptical eye to the supplement industry. Most nutritional supplements fail to see research or testing to the extent of FDA regulated pharmaceuticals.

Fewer supplement companies would exist if the public were not so desperate for a quick fix. So, while you are waiting for a quick and easy solution for weight loss and great health, I have a few ideas that just might work.

On a monthly basis take a portion of the money you might spend on junk food, cigarettes, alcohol, supplements and top-tier cable packages and invest in a few sessions with a registered dietician or Weight Watcher’s program. You are investing in your family’s health by learning how to create a healthy menu. Invest some more of those funds in an exercise class or hire a personal trainer for a few sessions to help you start an exercise program. Recruiting family and friends to join you will make it more fun.

You will not find a magic bullet, and no one can make you take care of yourself. In the end, your health and wellness are completely up to you. You can make excuses, or you can get busy living.
