North Terre Haute church plans chili cook-off, musical

The musical comedy “The Legend of Wiley Jake” will take the stage at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at North Terre Haute Christian Church at 3133 E. Park Ave. Activities begin with an all-church chili cook-off on the church parking lot at 5 p.m., and a musical follows.

Co-written and performed by J.T. Oaks and his father, Tommy Oaks, the musical is based on the biblical story of Jacob and Esau. “It’s a fun look at a Bible story,” said Tommy Oaks, a native of Elizabethton, Tenn. “Since it’s a Western setting, we encourage the audience to come dressed in Western attire. We want them to have a good time.”

The musical is enjoyable for all ages. “John Thomas and Tommy are master storytellers who have hearts for God,” said lead pastor Chris McKinney. “We are grateful to have them share this fun performance with the entire community.”

John Thomas Oaks is a popular actor, lyricist and composer. His works include “Star Queen,” the story of the biblical book of Esther; “Sunny,” a retelling of Jesus’ story of the prodigal son; and “Carol,” based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” He also tours with his father, Tommy, a traveling speaker with more than 40 years of experience in the ministry, including youth ministry, preaching, campus ministry and evangelism.
