Strassenfest, a salute to German culture, starts April 25

TERRE HAUTE — The Strassenfest, hosted by the German Oberlandler Club for the 36th year, is scheduled to open April 25 at the tent-covered Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace at Ninth and Cherry streets.

Admission is free.

Club members will serve bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, schnitzels, chicken, desserts and beverages at 11 a.m. on Thursday and Friday and at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Take-out food will be available.

The Jay Fox Bavarian Showtime Band of Fort Wayne and the Alpen Echos of Cincinnati will alternate to provide continuous music from 4 p.m. to midnight each day.

The German Oberlandler Club, a totally volunteer group, was organized in 1967 to preserve German culture in the Wabash Valley. It has hosted 75 Strassenfest and Oktoberfest events in 40 years. The thousands who attend experience a mix of German fellowship and Hoosier hospitality and help fund scholarships, youth soccer and other community projects.
