Earth Day 2013 offers free food, music, kids' activities, educational exhibits

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Where can you go for live musical entertainment, free activities for kids, educational exhibits and food from local vendors — all while learning care and reverence for Earth?

The 15th Annual Earth Day celebration at St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, that’s where.

People of all ages can learn, play and shop locally on the grounds of the Sisters of Providence, 10 minutes northwest of downtown Terre Haute.

The Earth Day Celebration is hosted by White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Admission is free. Freewill offering opportunities will be available at entrance gates to help with the cost of the event. The 2013 Year of the River is this year’s theme, and Earth Day will include exhibits on keeping water sources healthy.

“We have a lot of really cool stuff this year,” said Robyn Morton, associate director of White Violet Center for Eco-Justice. “One of the big ones is we’re going to have a Native American drumming and flute circle performing throughout the day and doing the opening ceremony. So people will want to arrive right at 11 a.m. to not miss that performance. We will also have a live performance by nationally renowned bluegrass musician Solly Burton and Brent McPike.”

According to a Sisters of Providence press release: “White Violet Center for Eco-Justice exists to foster a way of living that recognizes the interdependence of all creation. Focused on hope and healing, the center offers leadership and education in the preservation, restoration and reverent use of all natural resources.”

Here is the day’s schedule for Saturday:

• 11 a.m.: Opening and blessing of the drum by The Family (Native American musicians)

• 11:15 a.m.: Alpaca shearing demonstration by White Violet Farm Alpacas

• 11:30 a.m.: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College Chorale & Madrigals performance
